New Delhi, May 28: Rashtriya Lok Dal leader Ajit Singh, who resigned from the Union Cabinet last week, today met Congress president Sonia Gandhi, amid reports that the two parties may go for electoral alliance. Singh's meeting with Gandhi assumes significance in the wake of RLD withdrawing its five Ministers from the Mayawati Government soon after its leader quit the Vajpayee Government.

The RLD office-bearers are to meet shortly to take stock of the political situation and decide whether the party should continue its support to the BSP-BJP coalition Government in Uttar Pradesh.

Neither side was willing to come forward to state what transpired at the meeting but Singh was understood to have sought Gandhi's support in toppling the Mayawati Government.

Senior Congress leaders Natwar Singh and Salman Khurshid were present during the half-an-hour meeting.

RLD has 14 MLAs in 403-member Uttar Pradesh assembly.
