Jammu, Oct 30: Rumours about militants attack on
Raghunath Temple here tonight set off panic in Jammu city
forcing authorities to close the main gates of the shrine and
deployment of posse of policemen around it.
The city remained in the grip of fear for about an hour
with shopkeepers downing their shutters and people running
helter-skelter as words went around that the temple has come
under attack.
Police immediately rushed to Raghunath Temple and asked the guards there to close the main gates, official sources said adding police were deployed in adjoining areas of the temple.
However, after half an hour authorities found out that there was no terrorist attack on the temple. It was learnt that some crackers were burst when a marriage procession was passing along Shalimar Road around 2000 hrs tonight.
Some people who were passing by had spread the rumours that militants had attacked the temple.
The police later rounded up some persons of the marriage party on the grounds that prohibitory orders under Section 144 were enforced in the city and no one was allowed to burst high grade crackers.
Police registered a case against them in the police station, according to DSP R K Chalotra.
