Islamabad, Aug 10: Afghanistan today welcomed Nato's scheduled takeover of the command structure of the International Security Assistance Force (Isaf). "The Afghan government is confident that ISAF's mission effectiveness will be enhanced by Nato's new role at the helm of the peacekeeping force in Kabul," a statement by the Afghan foreign ministry received here said.
The North Atlantic Treaty Organiation will take over command of ISAF tomorrow at the end of the six-month Joint German-Dutch Command.
"The Afghan government remains convinced that starting serious and meaningful discussions among all stakeholders to consider expanding the UN-approved mandate of ISAF beyond Kabul can take place at the earliest," the statement said.
It said, "Recent events around the world are a reminder that the threat of terrorism is still real, and warrants concerted efforts by all nations to deny terrorism any space or opportunity to indiscriminately harm innocent people".
