Guwahati, Aug 26: Chairman of the task force on interlinking of rivers Suresh P Prabhu today allayed fears that Assam would lose its rich water resource, once the project was implemented in the country. "There should be no room for any misinformation. Infact the state is going to benefit a lot by the project," Prabhu told reporters after meeting a cross section of the people, members of political parties, NGOs and technocrats to discuss the effect of the mega project in the state.

Prominent political parties including Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), student bodies including the powerful All Assam Students Union (aasu) and several ngos have opposed the scheme as according to them it would result in "draining out of the rich water resource" of the state.
Discussions were held throughout the country on the implementation of the project, Prabhu said, adding that there was still scope for making changes, if necessary, in the entire plan which would benefit the people.

He said the project could help solve the perennial flood problem of the state and help increase agricultural productivity which was not being exploited to the maximum at present.
