London, June 28: England captain Michael Vaughan was sent to hospital for a scan after withdrawing from the triangular series one-day international against South Africa at the Oval here today.
Vaughan, 28, pulled out after suffering a back spasm in practice shortly before the match got underway.
Marcus Trescothick took over the captaincy with Warwickshire left hander Jim Troughton taking Vaughan's place in the team. Yorkshire batsman Vaughan has missed large chunks of England's recent international programme with injuries.
Calf trouble forced him out of England's Test series in Pakistan during the 2000-01 season and he missed the whole of the home ashes series against Australia in 2001 with a knee injury. He then suffered a combination of shoulder, calf and knee problems, the latter requiring an operation, which ruled him out of the majority of England's pre-World Cup one-day series in Australia.
