Lahore, June 23: Suspected robbers opened fire on a security checkpoint in eastern Punjab province, killing two policemen before being shot dead later in a shootout with police, an official said today. The three men riding a motorcycle fired at the police checkpoint late yesterday in Dinga village after they were signaled to stop for a routine security check, said Malik Mohammed Iqbal, the chief of police in Gujranwala district, where the village is located.
Instead of complying with the police orders, the men opened fire, killing two policemen instantly, and sped away, Iqbal said.
Police reinforcements chased the assailants to a hideout in a nearby village where they were killed in a shootout, he said.
The men were wanted in connection with incidents of kidnapping, robberies and thefts, Iqbal said.
