Madurai, Dec 02: A 100-year-old woman could not find peace even in her burial because of the decades-long sibling hostility between her sons. The dispute between two sons over who has the right to perform the last rites for their centenarian mother forced the police to intervene and give protection for her burial ceremony near Paramakudi in Tamil Nadu's Ramanathapuram district last night.
Police said Murugan, the second son of the woman Ponnuthai, wanted to do the last rites as she was living with him for the past thirty years. However, Murugan's elder brother Gopal who was the first son of the woman claimed that he only had the right to do the funeral rites as the eldest son.
Gopal went to the court and filed a petition. The Magistrate ordered that the first son Gopal should be given the right to perform the rites.
Meanwhile, Murugan had completed the ceremonies in his house and was on way to the burial ground when his brother waylaid him with the court order. Then Murugan left the dead body on the road and left in a huff.
Police later took the body in an autorickshaw and arranged for Gopal doing the last rights again.
The two brothers were at loggerheads for the past four decades.
