Wagah, Dec 04: Indian polo team arrives in Pakistan. An eight-member Indian polo team together with six officials arrived in Pakistan's northern city of Lahore through Wagah border on Tuesday (December 2) in the latest of a series of sporting initiatives between India and Pakistan. The team will take part in the World Cup polo qualifying tournament in Lahore, Pakistan, from December 6 to 14.
Since the summer the nuclear rival countries have been increasing their social and sporting ties. It is planned for transport and other communications to improve between the two countries as well in a move to reduce tensions. Besides India, the other participating countries in Group D, which covers Asia, Oceania and Africa, are Pakistan, Singapore, Australia and Iran. The matches will be of over four to six chukkas, or rounds. The winner will qualify for the six-team World Cup finals in Paris in April. The selector Tajinder Sher Gil said he had a feeling of coming back home as he was born in Lahore.

"Its going to be a marvelous tour, and we are going to enjoy being in Lahore, and to beating in teams, that's really excellent, and as Lahorees say, 'the person who has not seen Lahore has not born', but from my side I can tell you 'I was born here, so, I am very happy to come back home," Sher Gil said.

The India polo players said India stands a bright chance of qualifying for the finals. The polo world is divided into four zones - the Asia-Oceania- Africa combine, Europe, North America and South America - and they send teams for the World Cup finals, with two teams qualifying from North America and Europe because they comprise a large number of Polo playing countries.
