Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 07: Several students and
policemen were injured when a protest march by pro-Left
student outfits against the government's educational policy
turned violent, prompting police to lathicharge and burst
teargas shells here today.
The agitating students pelted stones and clashed with
police in front of the secretariat, holding up traffic for a
couple of hours in the busy mg road in the city.
According to police, seven agitators and six policemen
have been hospitalised. The injured included SFI state
vice-president Joshy Joseph.
Two KSRTC buses and a health department van were stoned,
as the violence spread to nearby campuses with irate agitators
barging into classrooms to exhort their colleagues to join the
protest.
The march was taken out to express solidarity with
leaders of pro-Left outfits led by SFI who have been on an
indefinite fast before the government secretariat for over a
week to press the government to bring down higher fees in
self-financing institutions.
