Jammu, Oct 15: Security forces have gunned down a commander of the militant outfit Hizbul-Mujahideen in Banihal area of Doda district, delivering a severe blow to the outfit in the area, official sources said today. The Hizbul commander, Nazir Ahmed Wani, was killed last night in an encounter between security forces and the ultras in Nawkote-Doligam area of Banihal Tehsil.
Wani, alias Paplu, operating in the area for the last seven years, was involved in many killings, sources said, adding his elimination was a setback to Hizbul in the area.
Some arms and ammunition, including one AK rifle, were recovered from the slain militant.
Meanwhile, a BSF constable, Deeraj Singh who was injured in a militant rocket attack on their picket at Chaklas in Gool area on Sunday night, succumbed to his injuries at the military hospital here yesterday.
Reports from Doda district said that one Farid Ahmed was injured when militants opened fire near his residence at Astangam in Marwah area yesterday. He was admitted to a local hospital.
Militants also fired on Village Defence Committee (VDC) member Ram Lal in Bani area of Kathua district yesterday. The alert VDC member retaliated forcing the militants to flee, the sources said. Bureau Report
