Ahmedabad, Aug 04: Rescue operations have been suspended at the site of the building collapse which claimed 43 lives in Surat city, as chances of finding survivors were remote, official sources said here today. However, the work to remove debris was on and fire personnel were at the site to salvage bodies, if any, from the rubble, the officials said.

Meanwhile, atleast two of the 27 people injured in the incident are reported to be critical and undergoing treatment at the government hospital.
Earlier in the day, chief minister Narendra Modi made a short visit to the site and ordered the police commissioner to conduct a detailed inquiry aided by forensic experts.

Modi, who had also visited the injured, announced free treatment to them and assured Rs 50,000 for the next of kin of those killed in the incident.

Meanwhile, Surat police has registered a case of 'negligence' against the owner of the collapsed structure and was investigating the incident.
