Vladivostok (Russia), Oct 29: A powerful explosion rocked a mine in Russia`s far eastern region of Primorye today, injuring five miners and leaving the fate of 55 others unknown, local officials said. Of the 70 miners who were underground at the time of the explosion, 15 managed to scramble out, but 55 were feared trapped some 735 meters below ground, a spokesman for the local office of the emergencies ministry said.

The reason for the blast which wrecked the Tsentralnaya mine in the town of Partizansk was as yet known.

The explosion occurred as rescue teams launched a last-gasp effort to save 13 miners trapped underground for a sixth day in Southern Russia`s Novoshakhtinsk. Bureau Report
