A runner-up to Venus Williams each of the last three years here, Davenport advanced to a quarter-final meeting with the winner of today's match between sixth seed Magdalena Maleeva of Bulgaria and Spain's Magui Serna.
Dokic has lost all eight meetings with Davenport, who received a first-round bye. The 20-year-old has seen her WTA tour ranking drop from eighth to 23rd.
In another second-round match yesterday, Anna Pistolesi of Israel rallied for an impressive 0-6 7-6 (7/5) 6-2 triumph over Russia's Vera Zvonareva. Pistolesi has been running into form heading into the US Open, winning titles this month in Poland and Finland.
The first round was completed earlier yesterday, with Maleeva overcoming Thai qualifier Tamarine Tanasugarn 5-7 6-4 6-4. The 28-year-old Bulgarian made it past the first round for the first time in three appearances at this tournament.
Elena Dementieva of Russia rolled to a 6-2 6-4 first-round victory over lucky loser Silvia Farina Elia of Italy. Dementieva next will face seventh seed Conchita Martinez of Spain.
