New Delhi, July 01: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has asked the commissioner of police of Chennai to look into the allegation of a patient from Pudukkottai that a local clinic and its doctor were responsible for conducting about 12 surgeries on her with no positive result. In a complaint to the commission, Zeenath begum, a resident of Alangudi alleged that Dr. N Rangabashyam and his Sree Ramana surgical clinic had charged her to the tune of Rs 35 lakhs for the surgeries. The doctor had performed 12 surgeries on her for a complication resulting from severance of connection between her intestine and rectum after a hysterectomy. She alleged adding that the doctor had failed in his duty.
However, Dr. Rangabashyam said he had operated on her only two times and that too to repair the damage done by other surgeons earlier. "I hold Dr Rangabashyam responsible for my present health condition and the deficient service rendered by him has put me and my family members to untold miseries and it has caused severe mental agony to me", she said in her complaint.

On may one this year, commission decided that the complaint may be transmitted to the concerned authorities in Chennai for such action as deemed "appropriate" and sought an action report within six weeks. Subsequently, NHRC sent the relevant complaints to the Chennai Commissioner of Police.

The commission has reminded the police again yesterday and asked for an action taken report by August one, the sources said.

The patient is at present admitted to Pushpavati Singhania Research Institute here. Bureau Report
