Lucknow, Sept 17: At least 34 legislators were found guilty of misuse of their authority to get villages electrified in 1998-99 and 1999-2000 during the tenure of BJP-led government in Uttar Pradesh, resulting in a loss of Rs 4.36 crore to state exchequer, the Comptroller and Auditor General said in its report tabled in the state assembly today. The CAG said in 2001, then Chief Minister Rajnath Singh too used his influence and got five villages electrified which did not form part of his constituency.

As per rules, each legislator was entitled to recommend a maximum of five villages in his constituency for electrification in an year and for each village the legislator was entitled to spend Rs 5 lakh under district plan. In two financial years between 1998 and 2000, at least 203 additional villages were electrified following the direction of 34 legislators, the report said.

Two former power ministers, Virendra Singh and Laloo Singh, also misused their power and got some additional villages electrified, the CAG report said.
