Singapore, Nov 26: Plans by an Indian telecommunication firm to
land a high-speed submarine cable here face a delay because the
company has yet to seek permission, the Singapore regulator said
today.
Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited (VSNL) ''has not applied for a
licence to land its cables in Singapore'', the Infocomm Development
Authority (IDA) spokesman told reporters.
The IDA said it would facilitate the process if VSNL makes an application by helping it work with the relevant government agencies to obtain the necessary permits.
VSNL was reported last week to be planning to build a 3,100-kilometre submarine fibre optic cable to Singapore that would be capable of carrying 5.12 terabits of data per second.
A joint statement by VSNL and US-based Tyco Communications said the two signed a contract for the cable linking the city of Chennai with the city-state.
VSNL was reported as saying the USD 100 million cable project would be operational by the end of next year.
