Gwalior, Oct 26: India beat Australia by 37 runs in the second one-dayer of the TVS Cup tri-series here today.
Comfortably chasing 285 runs for a win, Australia ran into trouble in the 25th over and never recovered thereafter, ending their innings on 246 for 9 in the allotted 50 overs.
Things were quite different upto the 25th over, till which time openers Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden had stitched together a 132-run partnership. Then Zaheer Khan opened the Aussie floodgates, claiming Gilchrist's wicket. His sparkling 83-run innings was studded with 8 hits to the fence.
Spinner Anil Kumble got the home crowd on their feet as he followed that wicket with one of his own. Skipper Ricky Ponting became his victim, caught and bowled after making just 2 runs.
Hayden was the next to go, stumped by young wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel off Kumble for 47. And Khan followed that up in the very next over with Andrew Symonds' scalp.
Damien Martyn (16), Michael Bevan (18) and Ian Harvey (4) were the next three casualties. Part-time bowler Virender Sehwag, who had earlier failed with the bat, made up by nabbing the vital wickets of Martyn and Bevan.
Brad Hogg and Andy Bichel were the last two wickets to go, by which time an India win was a near certainty anyway.
