New Delhi, Aug 05: In a fresh bid to get the underworld don and main accused in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts Abu Salem and his girl friend Monica Bedi extradited, the CBI has marshalled additional details for the prosecution in Portugal. A senior CBI official was rushed to Lisbon, who briefed the prosecutor general's office, representing the Indian government in the extradition trial and gave additional inputs about Salem's anti-national activities in India. The CBI official was sent after a local court in Portugal ruled out extradition of Monica saying that the crime committed by her was similar to the crime committed in Lisbon and that she could be tried there only. However, the local court order had been challenged by the Portuguese prosecutor general's office in the higher court. According to the Portuguese law, no counsel of CBI could represent it in that country.
"We have to ensure that even Monica Bedi is brought before the law of the land as this will act as a deterrent for criminals hiding abroad after committing crime," a senior CBI official commented on the necessity to depute an officer to Portugal.
