Mumbai, Aug 24: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, who brought the ashes of veteran freedom fighter Shyamji Krishna Varma and his wife Bhanumati from Geneva today, embarked on 'Asthi Darshan' yatra here. The yatra, which will go all over the metropolis before leaving for Gujarat will be joined by Union Minister Ram Naik and Lok Sabha Speaker Manohar Joshi in the city.
At several places public meetings and "Asthi-Darshan" have been organised to pay homage to the veteran freedom fighter who died in 1930.
Varma had executed a will saying his ashes be preserved in a locker and after 100 years it be taken to free India.
The Shyamji Kirshna Varma Foundation and BJP MP Kirit Somaya took the initiative and on their plea, Gujarat government decided to fulfil the last wishes of Varma.
Modi will leave tonight for Gujarat by road and travel to various places before reaching Mandvi, home town of Varma, with the ashes on August 30.
Gujarat government has decided to set up a memorial in Mandvi as a fitting tribute to the freedom fighter, BJP sources told.
The yatra in the metropolis is scheduled to visit various places including Wilson High School at Girgaum, where Varma had obtained education, before ending at Borivili. Bureau Report
