New Delhi, Feb 29: The Election Commission of India today announced the schedule for the Lok Sabha elections. The four-phased elections would be held on April 20, April 26, May 5 and 10. The counting would be held on May 13 and the results will be declared on the same day. Addressing a crowded press conference in the capital today, the Chief Election Commissioner T S Krishnamurthy unveiled the keenly-awaited dates.

Sixteen states and Union Territories comprising 141 constituencies will go to polls on April 20, 11 states and Union Territories comprising 137 constituencies will go to polls on April 26, 7 states and Union Territories comprising 83 constituencies will go to polls on May 05, and 16 states and Union Territories comprising 182 constituencies will go to polls on May 10.
The CEC said that Jammu and Kashmir will have polling on four days, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh will have three-day polling, while the states of Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur and Orissa will have two-phased polls. Remaining states will have one-day polling, Krishnamurthy said.

The counting of votes will take place on May 13, except in Andhra Pradesh where it might take place a day or two earlier. Results will be declared the same day.

Notification for the first phase of polls will be issued on March 24, March 31 for second phase, April 08 for third phase and April 16 for fourth and final phrase.

Simultaneous assembly elections will also be held in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, Karnataka and Sikkim. The schedule followed will correspond with the relevant parliamentary constituencies.

Describing the polls as historic, the CEC said that for the first time EVMs will be used all over the country. He said the Model Code of Conduct had come into effect immediately and was applicable to all political parties. He appealed to all parties to adhere to the principles of the Model Code of Conduct and desist from fighting these elections on the basis of violence and personal attacks.

Krishnamurthy also said that candidates will have to submit their personal details and this information will be made available to the public at large through various channels.

He appealed to the voters not to shy away from the polling booths and called upon the youngsters to show responsibility by exercising their franchise. He also asked the district authorities to ensure that elections are held in a free and fair manner.
