Bhubaneswar, Oct 27: A cyclone alert was sounded today in Orissa's south coastal districts after a deep depression formed in the Bay of Bengal. Under the influence of the depression heavy to very heavy rains are likely to occur in the coastal districts of Orissa and West Bengal, a cyclone alert bulletin of the Met office here said.
The deep depression lay centred about 850 km south east of Paradip at 0830 hours this morning.
It is likely to intensify further and move in a north- westerly direction and cross north Andhra Pradesh-south Orissa coast between Gopalpur and Visakhapatnam by tomorrow night or early on Wednesday morning.
Heavy rains accompanied by squally weather are likely with gusty winds - speed reaching upto 70 to 80 km per hour - expected along and off the coastal districts of south Orissa and West Bengal, the Met office said.
The sea will be very rough from October 28 afternoon and fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea. The public have been advised to cooperate with the state administration in disaster management efforts, the bulletin said.
The Met office in Kolkata said heavy to very heavy rains were likely to occur in West Bengal in the next 24 hours with downpours already lashing most parts of the state.
Baharampur recorded six cm rains in the morning while Bankura received over four cm rains. Kolkata recorded about 8.7 mm rains, the Met office said.
