Parliament should undo SC judgement in Veerasamy`s case
New Delhi, June 18: Former Union law minister Shanti Bhushan has called upon legislators to undo the Supreme Court judgement in Justice Veerasamy`s case which he said had barred all investigations against judges.
New Delhi, June 18: Former Union law minister Shanti Bhushan has called upon legislators to undo the Supreme Court judgement in Justice Veerasamy's case which he said had barred all investigations against judges.
"Parliament must overrule the judgement in Veersamy's
case if changes to the law of contempt that seek to include
truth as defence to contempt proceedings is to be effective",
Shanti Bhushan said while delivering the Dr Kailash Nath Katju
memorial lecture here yesterday.
If investigations are prohibited, then how will truth be discovered, the legal luminary asked adding if this was not done then judges would be sitting in their own cause which was not desirable.
Expressing "anguish" at the state of affairs in the judiciary, Rajya Sabha MP L M Singhvi said "when we granted independence to judiciary, we did not intend to put it beyond accountability."
"Nothing in a democratic system can be put on a pedestal as to be beyond accountability," Singhvi said and called for a national debate to bring forth a procedure which can ensure judicial independence as well as accountability. Bureau Report
