Kendrapara (Orissa), Nov 01: The bright lights from the wheeler group of isles that illuminate the Gahirmatha beach in Orissa's Kendrapara district will not be dazzling when the Olive Ridley sea turtles arrive for mass nesting this winter. The bright illumination of an important installation of the Defence Research and Development Organisation in the island had been affecting the turtles who come in lakhs to lay eggs on the beach twice every year, forest department sources said.

The lights actually disturbed the reproductive process of the turtles and distracted the hatchlings causing disorientation in them resulting in high mortality, they said.
Officials of the Rajnagar mangrove (wildlife) division recently held a meeting with DRDO personnel to discuss the matter and it was agreed that the bright lights would be fully masked before the turtles arrive for mass nesting.

The Gahirmatha beach is known to be the world's largest rookery for Olive Ridley sea turtles.
