Coimbatore, July 20: Taking strong exception to the BJP's remarks on AICC chief Sonia Gandhi, senior Congress leader Arjun Singh, today said it was the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre which was a security risk. "NDA government at the Centre, led by the BJP, itself is a security risk and its conduct and governance has proved this to the country," he told reporters here.
He was reacting to BJP's allegations that if Sonia became the Prime Minister it would be a security risk for the country. Alleging that terrorists had a free run from Kashmir to Akshardham and east and west, Singh said attacks on the symbol of unity like Red Fort and Parliament had proved the present regime itself to be a security risk. He also cited the Kargil incursion.
There was no consistency and forethought in Prime Minister A B Vajpayee's action, which was "totally unmindful of basic interests," he said, adding, "We are fighting Pakistan inside our courtyard instead at the doorsteps." Claiming that the prime objective of his party was the consolidation of secular forces to counter the "communal and divisive forces", Singh said that Sonia was the best person to do this task in tune with Congress policy.
