New Delhi: Sharks are amazing creatures – from a good distance. One of the most fierce predators, they are also one of the most documented marine species.
A video has recently gone viral, showing how a huge white shark lunging for a chunk of tuna accidentally barges in through a shark-proof cage with a diver inside!
Sounds terrifying, doesn't it? The incident took place near Guadalupe Island off the west coast of Mexico.
The cage was actually being used as bait for the 13-foot long white shark by enthusiastic shark-watchers, when it came up against the cage and simply swam right inside.
The entire event got captured on camera and as the cameraman explains it on YouTube, “These awesome sharks are biting at large chunks of tuna tied to a rope. When a great white shark lunges and bites something, it is temporarily blinded. They also cannot swim backwards. So this shark lunged at the bait, accidentally hit the side of the cage, was most likely confused and not able to swim backwards, it thrust forward and broke the metal rail of the cage.”
Imagine the horror of the poor diver who got trapped inside along with the shark. The entire incident was over within a few seconds, but it may have seemed like ages to the diver. Thankfully, though, neither the shark-watchers, nor the diver, nor the shark got hurt.
“The diver is a very experienced dive instructor, remained calm, and when the shark thrashed back outside the cage, the diver calmly swam back up and climbed out completely uninjured,” noted the cameraman, as per Gizmodo.
The video was posted on Gabe and Garrett, a YouTube channel that chronicles the adventures of two children from California. Watch the video below:
