Humpback whale stranded in Moriches Bay to possibly be euthanised: Reports

New Delhi: A humpback whale, 25-feet long, was spotted stranded along a sandbar in Moriches Bay over the weekend, visibly struggling to escape.

Experts have since been monitoring its movements to gauge its condition while hoping it would escape the sandbar on its own.

To monitor the whale, a marine research and preservation organization by the name of Riverside Foundation is working together with the local department of environmental conservation. According to reports, there are high possibilities that the whale was stuck due to low tide.

Failed efforts by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to move the whale to deeper waters by creating wave actions to boost the mammal's motion have created a feeling of helplessness. One local even tried dredging the sand to dig a canal to allow for deeper waters, however, due to safety, the police and the coast guard have kept them away.

The large marine creature is still stuck near Long Island.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has noted that they cannot, in any way, move the whale physically as it would definitely create internal injuries. One report even claimed that the worst case option for this is the possibility of euthanizing the large sea creature, as per Nature World News.
