Maha Kumbh mela, the first major media event of the millennium beginning on Tuesday and the largest spiritual gathering on earth has brought almost all the major names in the international media in Allahabad.
The big names include Channel 4, BBC, CNN, Stern Magazine from Germany, NHK Japan Broadcasting and TV, and Mainaichi Broadcasting System from Tokyo, an official said. "Already more than 100 people have registered with us, apart from the numerous representatives of the local media. We are expecting the numbers to swell by around 400-500 by Tuesday," he said. "Major international news organisations started arriving in Allahabad from Janurary 2 when registration for media started," he said. "Over 30 tents have been erected for visiting journalists and most of them have already been reserved," he added. The electronic media outnumbered print, thanks to the cable and satellite channel fame after the last Kumbh in 1989. The spiritual channel `Aastha` which has won the rights to telecast the daily events of the mela have camped in Allahabad with 125 strong crew with ten cameras. Webdunia.com, the official nodal website of the mela has also made elaborate provisions to keep the media updated on the day`s events, an official said. Bureau Report
