Bloody build-up to Lanka polls
With the campaign for October 10 Parliamentary elections entering the final week, a record number of 1062 poll-related incidents of violence, including 16 murders have so far been reported from various parts of the country.

The Center for Monitoring Election Violence, an independent organization, reported that never in the past has such a large number of incidents been recorded.
Sri Lankan Muslim Congress candidate and the Deputy Minister Mlam Hizbullah had a narrow escape on Saturday evening when his car and the convoy came under heavy gun fire attack from a group of youths, suspected to be LTTE. Seven people, including four civilians and three policemen were injured in the attack.
As reported by the police, an opposition party supporter died in the hospital after he received gun shot injuries on Saturday night.
Meanwhile, Deputy Defence Minister Anuruddha Ratwatte's son was released on bail by the Kandy magistrate in connection with a shooting incident recently. He was produced before the Magistrate for allegedly attacking a motorcade of an Opposition Party candidate and his supporters.
President Chandirka Kumaratunga left the island on Saturday morning and is reported to have gone to London for a brief medical check up.
Meanwhile, a group of European Union election observers currently in the country conducted meetings with various party workers, election and police officials.
