Director General of Police C. Dinakar on Saturday dismissed rumours that Nagappa, the hostage who had escaped from brigand Veerappan’s clutches had been arrested.

Dinakar told the media that Nagappa was not in police custody, but had only been given police protection. “He is a free man,” he said.
Asked if Nagappa had told the police something more than he had revealed at his press conference on Friday, he said: “What he has revealed, is not worth revealing.” Dinakar also admitted: “Information coming from Chennai is that whatever Nagappa has said is not true.”
Meanwhile, Home Minister Mallikarjuna Kharge said that Chief Minister S.M. Krishna had called an all-party meeting on Oct 3 to discuss the latest developments. He had also called a meeting of MPs from the State the same day. After these meetings, he would hold talks with his Tamil Nadu counterpart M. Karunanidhi.
