While 80 rebels were killed during the attack on the garrison at Nagerkovil in the north-eastern part of the peninsula on Thursday, another 15 were killed when the naval craft destroyed three rebel boats, while they were bringing reinforcements to the area, an official release in Colombo said.
“The rebel attack was beaten back by inflicting heavy casualties,” it said. Thirteen army soldiers were killed and 62 wounded taking the total number of the armymen killed in the Nagerkovil battle to seventeen.
“Besides recovering huge caches of weapons left by the rebels, troops consolidating their defences in the area, recovered 22 bodies of the rebels, left behind by the fleeing militants," it said.
