Feature-length animated films are now eligible for their own Oscar, the academy of motion picture arts and sciences has announced.
Long a dream of Hollywood's animators, the new award for best animated feature will only be triggered by the release of eight or more eligible films in a calendar year, the academy said in a statement on Wednesday.
“The first Oscar could be presented in 2002, coinciding with the awards' first presentation in their new Hollywood home,” the academy said.
To be eligible, the films must be at least 70 minutes long and be primarily animated.
It is the first new Oscar created since 1981, when the academy established an award for makeup, and an honorary Oscar for a career of technological contributions. Bureau Report
