A Rs 45 crore World Bank aided project for upgradation of technical education has been launched in Himachal Pradesh envisaging establishment of computer centres in all polytechnics and implementation of various technical education schemes. The cost of the project would be borne by the Union Government to the extent of 80 per cent, an official spokesman said. The Ministry of Labour has also approved a Rs 8.13 crore World Bank aided skill development project for the state.
The centrally sponsored project to be financed jointly by Centre and the state on 50:50 basis envisaged modernisation of audio-visual aids, loans for self employment and addition of new trades in the industrial training institutes. The state government has also prepared a ‘100 days action plan’ providing for opening of new ITIs, private sector investment in technical education, recruitment of skilled manpower in technical institutions and preparing reports to be submitted to funding agencies.

To make available skilled craftsmen in different skills, a craftsmen training scheme had also been started to impart vocational training through ITIs in the state. Currently one regional engineering college, 6 polytechnics and 34 including 16 ITIs for women were providing job oriented professional training to the students.
