United Kingdom: Liverpool defeated Everton 3-1 in what was the 228th Merseyside football derby to jump to the third spot in the English Premier League (EPL) here on Saturday
Senegalese winger Sadio Mane opened scoring for Liverpool after just eight minutes at Anfield stadium. English defender Matthew Pennington scored the equaliser for the visitors in the 28th minute, reports Efe.
Brazilian attacking midfielder Philippe Coutinho put Liverpool in the lead again just three minutes later.
Belgian forward Divock Origi scored the third goal for the hosts in the 60th minute.
After this victory, Liverpool are provisionally in the third position with 59 points, 10 points behind league leaders Chelsea.
Liverpool are behind runner-up Tottenham Hotspur with the same points on goal difference, while the latter still has two games in hand.
Everton remain in the seventh position with 50 points.
Liverpool head coach Jürgen Klopp said that they got a deserving victory, while ruing Mane`s injury that he thinks will force him to sit out of the game against Bournemouth on Wednesday.
"Today we played a really good game. Nearly everything was perfect, we won it, the performance was good (but) then we lose Sadio Mane. When I saw him in the dressing room, it didn`t look like he`ll be ready for Wednesday," the coach told Liverpool FC`s website.
"We will see, hopefully it`s not that serious, but of course it`s not nothing and that makes our life not easier, I would say."
When asked to clarify what type of injury Mane had sustained, Klopp replied: "I don`t know exactly, I don`t want to speculate now.
"Obviously he has pain and it didn`t look like it`s only a knock or a muscle or something, but we have to wait."
