This was stated by the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) of the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, Dr Jitendra Singh, in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha.

The provisions under Fundamental Rules of Central Civil Services (CCS) (Pension) Rule, 1972 and Rule, 16(3) (Amended) of All India Services (Death-cum-Retirement Benefits), 1958 have laid down the policy of periodic review and premature retirement of non-performing government servants.

More than 130 officers were given premature retirement in the past over two years, it was said in July 2017. In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, Singh had said at that time that service records of 11,828 Group 'A' and 19,714 Group 'B' officers had been reviewed.

He had also said that provisions of premature retirement were invoked or recommended against 30 Group 'A' and 103 Group B' officers. Of these, action was taken against 77 officers during 2015-16, 44 in 2016-17 and against 12 officers during 2017-18 (till May), Singh had added.
