Centre Slashes Petrol, Diesel Prices By Rs 2/Litre Across India

NEW DELHI: In a big relief for millions of consumers, the Narendra Modi government at the Centre on Thursday slashed petrol and diesel prices by Rs 2/litre across the country. Petrol in the national capital will now cost Rs 94.72 a litre compared to Rs 96.72 per litre currently, and diesel will come for Rs 87.62 against Rs 89.62 at present.

Confirming the development on X, Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said, ''By reducing the prices of petrol and diesel by Rs 2, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has once again proved that the welfare and convenience of millions of Indians and their families is always his top goal.''

In a post on X, the Oil Ministry said, ''The Oil and Marketing Companies (OMCs) have informed that they have revised Petrol and Diesel Prices across the country.''

The revised rates will come into effect from 6 am on Friday, the Oil Ministry said.

''Reduction in petrol and diesel prices will boost consumer spending and reduce operating costs for over 58 lakh heavy goods vehicles running on diesel, 6 crore cars and 27 crore two-wheelers,'' the Oil Ministry added in the post.

The previous pan-India revision to fuel prices was made on May 21, 2022, when the government slashed the excise duty on petrol and diesel by Rs 8 and Rs 6 per litre, respectively. Importantly, today's announcement of price reduction has come weeks ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
