New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday welcomed Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades at the joint press conference asserting that the India has contributed personnel to the UN Peace Keeping Force in Cyprus.
"I am delighted to welcome you and I know that India has enjoyed a special place in the heart of every Cypriot President. Cyprus and India share rich legacies of ancient civilizations and, our civilizations have influenced each other through millennia. India has always stood by Cyprus on all crucial issues. India has contributed personnel to the UN Peace Keeping Force in Cyprus. Three force commanders from India served in this capacity, and it is heartening for me to know that all of them are fondly remembered in Cyprus," said Prime Minister Modi.
Prime Minister Modi also praised President Anastasiades for leading a new era of peace, development, and security.
"Cyprus has successfully overcome its recent financial and banking challenges. Cyprus has also been recorded as one of the highest growth in Euro zone," said Prime Minister Modi.
Further referring to their discussions, Prime Minister Modi said, "The President and I agreed that India will offer excellent investment opportunities for Cypriot entrepreneurs. The industry and business in our two economies can shape attractive partnerships through the flagship programmes launched by my Government. The beautiful landscapes of Cyprus and the wide horizons of `Incredible India` can be a source of tourism promotion in both our countries."
Prime Minister Modi appreciated Cyprus`s support for India`s claim for a permanent seat in an expanded UN Security Council stating that, "Both of us believe that a reformed Security Council, reflective of the world as it is, and not as it was, is necessary to address the range of complex challenges facing the world today. I deeply appreciate your support for India`s claim for a permanent seat in an expanded UN Security Council. The President and I also discussed ways to strengthen our partnership in other inter-governmental organizations and regimes."
Earlier in the day, the two leaders witnessed the exchange of four agreements after delegation talks and working luncheon.The four agreements are Executive Programme on Culture, Education and Scientific Cooperation for 2017-2020; Work Plan under programme of Cooperation in Agriculture for 2017-2018; Merchant Shipping Agreement; and Air Aviation Agreement.
