By-election result 2020: The counting of votes in Assembly by-polls in Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Karnataka, and in six other states concluded on Tuesday (November 10) evening and the Bharatiya Janata Party has tasted victory in most of the states.
In MP, counting took place on 28 seats, and BJP won the majority of seats following which the Shivraj Singh Chouhan-led government will continue to stay in the state. The stakes were high for both the BJP and the Congress in these by-elections, considered a litmus test for the parties. The BJP needed to win at least eight of the 28 seats to retain power and attain a simple majority in the 230-member Assembly, whose effective strength is 229.
In Uttar Pradesh, the BJP won 6 seats while the Samajwadi Party took one seat.
The BJP clean swept in Gujarat after their win on all the 8 Constituencies. The resignation of Congress MLAs ahead of the Rajya Sabha elections in June had resulted in several vacancies. While the outcome of the elections had no effect on the stability of the Vijay Rupani-led BJP government in the state, the challengers' sway was tested.
In Karnataka, the ruling BJP won both the seats while the opposition Congress and JDS couldn't take a seat. The Bharatiya Janata Party also took the only seat in Telangana.
In Jharkhand, counting of votes took place for Dumka and Bermo assembly seats on Tuesday where Congress and the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha won one seat each.
Congress took the one seat that was up for grab in Haryana and the Biju Janata Dal won both the seats in Odisha.
In Manipur, the BJP won 4 and an independent won one seat while in Nagaland, the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party and an Independent candidate shared a seat each.
