Delhi MCD Mayor Election 2023 Highlights: The first municipal House after the high-stakes civic polls on December 4 was scheduled to take place today during which all newly elected councillors was to take the oath and the mayor and the deputy mayor was to be elected.

The AAP ended the BJP's 15-year rule in the civic body by bagging 134 wards in the MCD polls.

Delhi MCD Mayor Election 2023 Updates, Latest Result News: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was all set to lock horn today in the much anticipated contest of mayoral polls of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. However, as soon as the house convened, clash erupted between the AAP and the BJP over swearing-in of aldermen first. The house was adjourned following hours of choas and ruckus. Thus, neither the swearing-in nor the mayor election could take place today. The Delhi Congress has already said that it won't take part in the city civic body's mayoral election. Delhi Congress chief Anil Chaudhary said the party has unanimously decided not to support the Aam Aadmi Party or the BJP in the elections for the posts of mayor, deputy mayor and the leader of the house in the Municipal Corportion of Delhi. "Through secret ballot, Congress selected three Councillors for the leadership of the party in the MCD. While Nazia Danish will be the leader of the party in MCD, Sheetal will be her deputy and Shagufta Chaudhary will be the chief whip," Chaudhary said.

The AAP ended the BJP's 15-year rule in the civic body by bagging 134 wards in the MCD polls. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 104 wards to finish second, while the Congress won nine seats in the 250-member municipal House.

"The chaotic conditions witnessed today in the Municipal Corporation House would never have happened. A very shameful incident happened. This was done by those who have come to power by calling themselves anarchists. Arvind Kejriwal also calls himself anarchist," said MoS Meenakshi Lekhi.

MCD Election Live: Mayor election postponed due to AAP-BJP clash

Amid chaos and clash between the AAP and BJP members on Friday, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) House was adjourned before the commencement of the mayoral polls. The House witnessed violent clashes between the councillors of the two parties.

The chaos started after the AAP objected to the oath-taking of nominated councillors. After the presiding officer asked aldermen to take the oath, the AAP councillors started creating a ruckus claiming that it was not the custom for the aldermen to take oath before the elected councillors.

Delhi was set to get its next mayor on Friday a month after the ruling Aam Aadmi Party unseated the BJP from power in the civic body. The AAP has fielded Shelly Oberoi against BJP`s Shalimar Bagh councillor Rekha Gupta for the top post.
