Shimla: In what could be the most befitting way to pay tribute to naib subedar Paramjit Singh, whose body was mutilated by Pakistani forces, a Himachal Pradesh-based couple has offered to look after the 12-year-old daughter of the martyr.
The naib subedar was killed near the Line of Control (LoC) in Krishna Ghati area of Poonch district in Jammu and Kashmir on May 1 along with Border Security Force trooper Prem Sagar and their bodies "mutilated".
Yunus Khan, an Indian Administrative Service officer of the 2010 batch, and his wife, Anjum Ara, an Indian Police Service officer of the 2011 batch, have offered to look after Khushdeep Kaur, reported Hindustan Times.
The couple, who have a 4-year-old son, has contacted the martyr’s wife, Paramjit Kaur, and expressed their desire to take care of the expenses of Khushdeep, currently the Class 7 student, from school till marriage.
"Khushdeep will continue to stay with her family. We will be paying for all her expenses and meeting her from time to time to know about her problems and solve them. If she wants to become an IAS or IPS officer or choose some other career, we are there to help," The Times of India quoted Ara, SP of Solan district, as saying.
“My wife and I will be visiting the soldier’s village in Punjab on Saturday. We have spoken to the family. We want to build the child’s career. This is just a small contribution that we believe everybody should make for the country and its people,” Hindustan Times quoted Khan as saying.
Born in Malerkotla, Punjab, Yunus Khan is posted as deputy commissioner, Kullu.
Khan added: “By ensuring good education to his daughter, we are doing our duty as responsible citizens.”
Overwhelmed by the couple's offer, the naib subedar’s younger brother, Ranjit Singh, said: “I simply can’t express gratitude to this kind-hearted couple. It reminds me of what the Muslim ruler of Malerkotla, Nawab Sher Mohammad Khan, had done for the youngest sahibzadas (sons) of Guru Gobind Singh Ji.”
