New Delhi:  Former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee was admitted to the AIIMS on Monday for a urinary tract infection. In a statement issued at 10.45 pm, the hospital said that the BJP patriarch was being given appropriate treatment under the supervision of a team of doctors.

As news of his illness spread, people took to the social media to wish Vajpayee a speedy recovery. Following are some of the reactions:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the BJP leader at AIIMS. He enquired about the well-being of Vajpayee and met his family members. BJP president Amit Shah, senior party veteran LK Advani, Union Ministers Rajnath Singh and JP Nadda and Congress chief Rahul Gandhi were among others who paid a visit to the former PM.

Vajpayee was thrice elected the PM between 1996 and 1999 and is the only non-Congress prime minister to complete the full term of five years, from 1999 to 2004. As his health deteriorated, he had slowly withdrawn himself from public life and was confined to his residence for years.
