Srinagar: Four terrorists were killed on Monday as they attempted to carry out a suicide attack on a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) camp at Sumbal in Bandipora district of Jammu and Kashmir.
The heavily-armed terrorists lobbed grenades at the CRPF`s 45 Battalion camp in north Kashmir`s Sumbal region at around 4:35 am followed by heavy firing.
A police official said said the firing was retaliated by the guards even as police reinforcement was rushed to the scene of gun battle.
"The fidayeen militants kept firing as they tried to enter the camp. The attack was effectively repulsed by the CRPF sentry and Sumbal Police," CRPF Deputy Inspector General M Dinakaran told news agency IANS.
Luckily, no loss was reported from the CRPF side, he added.
Meanwhile, CRPF Inspector General (IG) Ravideep Singh Sahi told reporters the terrorists hurled grenades and used heavy volume of automatic gunfire to enter the camp around 4.35 am.
The four terrorists, who were foreigners, were engaged in a gunfight which lasted for nearly an hour. The exact identity of the attackers is being established.
"The alert sentries were joined by Jammu and Kashmir Police personnel in immediate retaliation. The four terrorists, who were foreigners, although their exact identity is being established, were engaged in a gunfight that lasted nearly an hour," Sahi said.
"They were neutralised 10-15 yards away from the camp's fencing," he added.
The CRPF camp in Sumbal town is 34 km away from Srinagar.
Several weapons have been recovered along with the bodies of four militants, whose identity is yet to be established, Dinakaran said.
Four AK-47 rifles, one UBGL (Underbarrel Grenade Launcher), over a dozen grenades and a huge cache of ammunition have also been seized, the official added.
