Chennani: The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed the Karnataka government to release at least 2,000 cusecs of Cauvery river water to Tamil Nadu on a daily basis.
The bench headed by justice Dipak Misra omprising Justice Amitava Roy and Justice A. M. Khanwilkar heard the petition regarding the dispute on Cauvery river between the two neighbouring states.
The court has fixed July 11 as the next hearing date.
It is to be noted that the apex will begin the final hearing of the Cauvery water disputes case from July 11 and will continue hearing the matter for 15 consecutive working days.
Meanwhile, the Kerala government has told the Supreme Court that it is not using the Cauvery water for building the dam and its project will be up to an optimum level.
Last year, the apex court had asked the Karnataka government to provide at least 2,000 cusecs of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu till it hears the matter.
The top court had last month dismissed the plea seeking compensation from both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu governments for the loss of property during the Cauvery water related dispute between the both states.
In January this year, the Tamil Nadu government had sought a compensation of Rs 2,480 crore from Karnataka for not releasing the river water to the state despite the Supreme Court's ruling.
The lawyer from the side of Tamil Nadu Shekhar Naphade urged the three-judge bench to bring the matter to a logical end for which there should be continuous hearing.
