Kerala MLAs enjoy 'beef fry' in breakfast before attending Assembly session to debate new cattle slaughter rules

Thiruvananthapuram: Just before the commencement of a special session of the Kerala Assembly to discuss Centre’s ban on sale of cattle for slaughter in animal markets, the lawmakers had beef fry in their breakfast.

Several Kerala MLAs headed to the assembly canteen to have their breakfast, which comprised beef fry, before attending the special session in the Assembly.

Though, on normal working days when the assembly is in session, generally beef is served only after 11 am in the canteem however, expecting a good number of MLAs, the meal was prepared early morning.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan today strongly opposed the Centre’s ban on sale of cattle for slaughter in animal markets at a special session of the Kerala Assembly convened to discuss the issue.

In a resolution moved at the special session, Vijayan said the ban had affected Kerala very badly and about five lakh people would be rendered jobless.

In Kerala about 2.5 lakh tonne meat, worth Rs. 6,552 crore is sold annually. Meat export was a source of income to those engaged in the sector and this has also been hit, he said.

Former chief minister VS Achuthanandan also slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party-Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (BJP-RSS) combine for the “senseless” new law on beef.

“This is nothing but a fraud. It has been supported by fraud Swami’s for various reasons best known to them. The BJP has an agenda to castrate certain rules,” Achuthanandan said.
