LIVE: 69.60% voter turnout recorded in Assam by-elections

Voting is underway since 7 AM to decide the fate of 16 candidates.

New Delhi: Over 27 per cent polling has been registered in the bypoll to Rajasthan's Dhariawad (Pratapgarh) assembly constituency while the figure for the Vallabhnagar (Udaipur) seat was more than 23 per cent till 11 am. Voting is underway since 7 AM to decide the fate of 16 candidates.

The by-polls in three Lok Sabha and 30 assembly constituencies across different states is being held today. The three parliamentary constituencies that are going for poll today are Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and the UT of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu. 

As far as the assembly constituencies are concerned, Andhra Pradesh will hold an election on one seat, Assam on five, Bihar on two, Haryana on one, Himachal Pradesh on three, Karnataka on two, Madhya Pradesh on three, Maharashtra on one, Meghalaya on three, Mizoram on one, Nagaland on one, Telangana in one and West Bengal on four seats. 

The counting will take place on November 2.

 An estimated 69.60 per cent of 7.96 lakh voters exercised their franchise in by-elections to five assembly constituencies in Assam till 5 pm on Saturday when polling ended, an official said. Voting has been peaceful in the five seats - Gossaigaon, Bhabanipur, Tamulpur, Mariani and Thowra.
Polling was conducted with strict adherence to COVID-19 protocols. The highest voter turnout of 76.71 per cent was recorded in Gossaigaon, followed by Thowra (75.07 per cent), Bhabanipur (74 per cent), Tamulpur (62 per cent) and Mariani (61.62 per cent), the official of the state Chief Electoral Officer's office said. Nearly 67 per cent polling was recorded in byelection to the Dadra and Nagar Haveli Lok Sabha constituency by 5 pm  Election Commission officials said. Voting was underway without any untoward incident, they added. It is scheduled to end shortly, at 6 pm. (PTI)
