Uttarakhand Glacier burst Live: UK PM Boris Johnson expresses solidarity with India

PM Narendra Modi said that he was reviewing the situation in Uttarakhand. PM said, "Am constantly monitoring the unfortunate situation in Uttarakhand. India stands with Uttarakhand and the nation prays for everyone's safety there. Have been continuously speaking to senior authorities and getting updates on NDRF deployment, rescue work and relief operations."

New Delhi: At least 10 people are feared dead and about 170 are missing after a glacier broke in Uttarakhand's Joshimath on Sunday (February 7, 2021). SDRF has begun the rescue operation at the tunnel near Tapovan Dam in Chamoli, where a canine squad has also been deployed to carry out the search operation. A flash flood hit the area yesterday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who said that he was reviewing the situation in Uttarakhand, spoke to Uttarakhand CM Trivendra Singh Rawat and took stock of the rescue and relief work underway.

Army deployed around 400 personnel in rescue operations besides sending two medical teams to the affected areas. An engineering task force of the Army was also deployed in Ringi village in Joshimath and a control room has been set up in the area. Several Indian Army helicopters have also been pressed into service to assist the civil administration in rescuing people from flood-affected areas

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat also cautioned against misleading and factless reports on social media about glacial burst that took place in the Rishiganga river. In a social media post in Hindi, CM Rawat said, "Misleading and factless news is being spread on social media by some person regarding the rise in the water level in Joshimath. I request everyone to ignore such rumours, and trust only those sources which are reliable."

Meanwhile, ITBP Spokesperson told ANI, "We've intensified search operation at the 2nd tunnel. We've information that around 30 people are trapped there. Around 300 ITBP jawans are deployed to clear the tunnel. Local administration says that around 170 people are missing."

ITBP rescued 12 people from a tunnel yesterday, these 30 are trapped in a different tunnel. The rescue operation is underway in different areas. More teams will be sent there if it is required, we are focussing on rescuing people from the tunnel first: Vivek Pandey, ITBP Spokesperson told ANI.
