Mungaoli, Kolaras (Madhya Pradesh) bypoll results 2018: As it happened
In closely-fought contests, the Congress on Wednesday retained the Mungaoli and Kolaras Assembly seats in bypolls in Madhya Pradesh.

"People have taken a decision. It's victory of truth and development. Madhya Pradesh ki janta ne mann bana liya hai BJP ki rawangi ka (People of Madhya Pradesh have decided to let BJP go). The government which had not seen the face of Mungaoli in 14 years camped there with their entire cabinet during election," says Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia.
In the 19th round in Kolaras seat, Congress leads by 6600 votes.
In the 17th round of Kolaras seat, Congress gets 1400 votes.
Congress' Bijendra Singh Yadav wins Mungaoli seat by 2124 votes. He has got 70808 votes, while BJP candidate Sahab Yadav has got 68684 votes.

Having lost two assembly bypolls to the Congress last year, the BJP was keen on recovering lost ground.
Both the seats fall under Jyotiraditya Scindia's parliamentary constituency Guna and were earlier held by the Congress.
While Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan led the BJP campaign with a host of ministers, Congress MP Jyotiraditya Scindia led the opposition attack.
Both Mungaoli and Kolaras saw high-voltage campaigns from the ruling BJP and the Congress which is keen to retain both seats.
BJP inching closer to Congress in Mungaoli. In the 13th and 14th round, BJP gains back momentum as it surges ahead of Congress.
In total, Congress is leading with 3222 votes.
A total of 23 rounds of counting will take place in Kolaras while in Mungaoli, the fate of the contestants would be finally known after 19 rounds.
In Mungaoli, Congress' Brijendra Singh Yadav is leading over his rival BJP candidate by 5,244 votes after the completion of 11th round of counting.
In Kolaras constituency, Congress candidate Mahendra Singh Yadav maintained his lead, established in the first round. He was ahead by 3,425 votes after the end of the tenth round of counting, said an election official.

The fate of 13 candidates in Mungaoli, including BJD's Rita Sahu, BJP’s Ashok Panigrahi and Congress' Pranaya Sahu, would be decided today.
In Kolaras bypoll, the contest is between the Congress candidate Mahendra Singh Yadav and BJP's Devendra Jain. For Mungaoli Assembly seat, Congress candidate Brijendra Singh Yadav and BJP's Baisahab Yadav are in the fray.
Overall, 13 candidates are in the fray in Mungaoli and 22 in Kolaras.
The bypolls were necessitated due to the death of Congress' MLA Mahendra Singh Kalukheda in Mungaoli and its Kolaras MLA Ram Singh Yadav. Both the constituencies are in the Guna Lok Sabha constituency, represented by Jyotiraditya Scindia.
In Madhya Pradesh, the bypolls are being viewed as a prestige battle for Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia. The results are expected to set the tone of 2019 Lok Sabha Polls

Bhopal: The Opposition Congress on Wednesday retained the Mungaoli and Kolaras Assembly seats in by-elections in Madhya Pradesh, though with reduced victory margins.
In Kolaras (in Shivpuri district), Congress candidate Mahendra Singh Yadav defeated the BJP's Devendra Jain by 8,086 votes, an Election Commission (EC) official said.
The Congress candidate got 82,523 votes, while his BJP rival polled 74,437 ballots. In 2013, Congress had won this seat by a margin of 24,953 votes.
In Mungaoli (Ashok Nagar district), Congress nominee Brajendra Singh Yadav emerged victorious by defeating his BJP rival Bai Sahab Yadav by 2,124 votes. Brajendra Singh Yadav got 70,808 votes, while the BJP candidate bagged 68,684. The Congress had won this seat by a margin of 20,765 votes in the 2013 Assembly polls.
The bypolls, held on February 24, 2018, were necessitated by the death of Congress MLAs Mahendra Singh Kalukheda (Mungaoli) and Ram Singh Yadav (Kolaras).
