New Delhi: Markets opened largely higher on Tuesday on positive global cues and strong buying by domestic institutional investors.

The BSE Sensex jumped 84.37 points or 0.24 percent to 35,582.81 while the NSE Nifty edged higher by 22.40 points or 0.21 percent to 10,663.35 in early trade.

Top gainers in the Sensex pack include Bharti Airtel, Bajaj Finance, M&M, PowerGrid, ICICI Bank, ONGC, L&T, Bajaj Auto, Vedanta, Tata Steel, Axis Bank and Yes Bank, rising up to 1.45 percent.

On the other hand, HUL, Tata Motors, Infosys, HDFC, TCS and IndusInd Bank were the losers, falling up to 0.76 percent.

Investor sentiment was positive on strong buying by domestic institutional investors (DIIs), said traders.

On a net basis, DIIs were net buyers to the tune of Rs 2,336.74 crore, while foreign institutional investors sold shares worth a net of Rs 1,239.79 crore on Monday, provisional data available with BSE showed.

Asian shares hovered near four-month highs on Tuesday, a Reuters report said. MSCI`s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was a shade firmer, while Japan`s Nikkei was almost flat. Chinese shares were little changed, too, with the blue-chip index up 0.1 percent after surging in the previous session.
