14 Assam constituencies record more than 90 pc turnout

In a record turnout, more than 90 per cent voters exercised their franchise in 14 constituencies in Assam in the second and final phase of just concluded Assembly polls.

Guwahati: In a record turnout, more than 90 per cent voters exercised their franchise in 14 constituencies in Assam in the second and final phase of just concluded Assembly polls.

Overall a high voter turnout of 84.72 per cent was recorded in the Assembly polls for 61 seats in the state.

The seven constituencies in Dhubri district recorded the highest voter turnout of 91.23 per cent with five registering more than 90 per cent polling.

Jaleswar constituency in Goalpara registered the highest turnout of 93.53 per cent in the state while the district, having four constituencies, itself came second among the districts with 90.65 per cent voting figures. Three other constituencies in Goalpara registered over 90 per cent turnout.

The other constituencies with more than 90 per cent polling are - Mankachar, Salmara South, Golakgunj, Bilasipara West and Bilasipara (West) in Dhubri district, Goalpara (West) and Goalpara (East) in Goalpara, Abhayapuri (North) and Abhayapuri (South) in Bongaigaon, Chaygaon in Kamrup, Dalgaon in Mangaldoi along with Dhing and Rupohihat in Nowgong district.

All the constituencies with 90 per cent turnout went to polls in the second phase, while the first phase with a total voter turnout of 82.20 per cent in itself, had no constituency in the 90's category.

The highest poll turnout in the first phase was in Naoboicha with 88.07 per cent and lowest in Silchar (75.05 per cent) while in the second phase, the lowest voter turnout was in Gauhati (East) with 79.21 per cent.

Another highlight is the high turnout of women with 68 constituencies registering more female voters in both phases of polls and registering a higher total turnout of 84.81 per cent as against 84.64 per cent male turnout.

Again in the second phase which concluded on Monday, 24 constituencies have recorded higher voter turnout. In the first phase, 48 constituencies had the distinction of more women than men turning up to exercise their franchise.

A total number of 1,69,00,487 voters, including 87,26,959 males and 81,73,528 females, exercised their franchise in the polls.
