Assam assembly polls: Hindu Bengali organisations skeptical of Modi's eviction policy, says report

Guwahati: Prominent Bengali organizations such as All India Bengali Udbastu Sanjukta Sangram Committee, the Assam Bengali Yuva-Chatra Federation and the Nikhil Assam Bangali Yuva Mancha are skeptical of Narendra Modi government’s policy on evicted Bengalis, a media report said.

“At a poll campaign in West Bengal recently Prime Minister Narendra Modi did say that the evicted Bengalis would be given Indian citizenship.

"However, Modi is conspicuous by his silence on the issue of evicted Bengalis in Assam.

“We appealed to the Hindu Bengalis of Assam not to vote for the BJP in this Assembly election because two years back Modi did say that the Hindu Bengalis would get Indian citizenship after the BJP coming to power.

"The promise has proved to be a hollow one,” the Sentinel Assam quoted Avijit Mazumdar, the national vice president of All India Bengali Udbastu Sanjukta Sangram Committee, as saying on Saturday.

“Hiteswar Saikia made a mistake by bringing in Himanta Biswa Sarma to the Congress. Now the BJP has blundered by following suit. In fact, the BJP has inducted a number of tainted leaders of other parties into its fold.

"The present state of affairs of the evicted Bengalis is the outcome of the repeal of the IM(DT) Act under the stewardship of Sarbananda Sonowal.

"Under an alliance between the BJP led by Sonowal and the AGP the evicted Bengalis of Assam can never think of anything that may rescue them,” Mazumdar was quoted as saying.
