Chennai: Former Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi on Wednesday criticised the state police for last week`s brutal murder of a 24-year-old software engineer at Chennai`s Nungambakkam railway station, saying the cops were only worried about protecting the powerful.

The DMK president also said lack of patrolling and an inadequate number of CCTVs was responsible for the incident.

"The police are just worried about protecting those in power. They should start protecting the common man. Lack of patrolling and CCTVs have failed Swathi. I condemn the Tamil Nadu police force," he said in a statement.

Earlier, the father of 24-year-old S. Swathi had expressed sadness at the fact that people remained mute spectators when the gruesome incident took place and some even fled the spot, leaving the body in a pool of blood for hours.

S Swathi was hacked by an alleged stalker while waiting for her train to go to work.

Reports say that those who witnessed the attack failed to react, while many walked away from the gruesome scene and took the next train.Shortly after being pulled up by the Madras High Court, the State Government transferred the investigation to the city police from the Government Railway Police.

A special team led by Nungambakkam Assistant Commissioner of Police has been constituted to probe the case.
